ISI Mark Registration / ISI Certification


The ISI mark is by far the most recognized product quality certification mark in the Indian subcontinent. The ISI mark is issued by Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). There are 341 mandatory products which need ISI certification before being sold in India.

How to get ISI Certification in India?

The manufacturer(s) have to complete the testing and documentation required by BIS in order to certify the product with ISI mark. The Procedure for Obtaining BIS Certificate of Conformity (CoC)

Certificate of Conformity (CoC) under Scheme-IV of Schedule II, Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) (Conformity Assessment) Regulations - 2018 may be granted by The Bureau for Goods and Articles (products) that are manufactured as per the defined standards given in the relevant Indian Standards.

The Products which are Mandatory under Certificate of Conformity (CoC)

1. Stampings / Laminations and Cores of Transformers (with or without winding).

The Indian Standards covered under Certificate of Conformity (CoC)

» IS 648:2006 (Cold rolled non-oriented electrical steel sheet and strip)

» IS 10613:2014 (Retro-Reflective Devices for Bicycles (Clause 1.14 of IS 10613:2014)

» IS 3024:2015 (Grain Oriented electrical steel sheet and strip)

» IS 16585:2016 (Fe based amorphous strip delivered in the semi-processed state)

Procedures of getting Certificate of Conformity (CoC) are given below:

Stage 1. Identification of Manufacturing Unit as per Indian Standards for

» Coils marked with ISI mark along with their Mill Test Certificate

» Setting up of in-house testing lab in accordance with required Indian Standards to obtain Certificate of Conformity (CoC)

Stage 2. Submission of the Application Form

» Arrange the Internal Test Reports and MTC of steel coils

» Gathering all mandatory documents

» Filling up the Application Form

» Online payment of the application fee directly to Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) (the payment should be paid in BIS account)

» Submitting the hard copies of application form together with all mandatory attachments to the applicable Branch Office (BO) of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)

Stage 3. Examination of Application and Selection of an Examination Officer

» All the submitted documents and information will be examined and if any correction is needed, the same will be intimated to the applicant (manufacturer) for rectification.

» Bureau of Indian Standards nominates an inspection officer for Factory Inspection.

Stage 4. Payment of Inspection Fees and Travel Expenditures for Inspection

» Paying the examination fee for inspection (the payment should be paid in BIS account)

» Receiving the validation about BIS Examination Officer

» Organize the Ticket, Lodging & Boarding for visiting officer(s)

Stage 5. Visit to Manufacturing Factory Unit

» A BIS inspection officer shall visit to the manufacturing factory for examination of the manufacturing arrangements, manufacturing process, quality standards, testing abilities, packaging and the storage area, etc.

» Inspection Officer may pick sample out of the produced products for testing with the existing testing facility.

Stage 6. If any, Notification of Closure of Non-Conformity by BIS

» If any non-conformity is pointed out by the inspection officer, correction of the same in the process of manufacturing factory or product standard has to be done accordingly.

» Submitting the proof of modification under taken by the manufacturing factory unit to close the raised non-conformity (NC closure).

Stage 7. Receiving the Certificate of Conformity (CoC)

» The BIS main and branch office will evaluate the reports and decide on granting of the Certificate of Conformity (CoC).

» The office of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) grants the Certificate of Conformity (CoC).
